Life has been busy but time and again, looking through our photographs has really helped me stay centered. It seems silly to write but what you are able to capture in your work is a great reminder on what is forever more important than anything else.
— Chloe & Brandon

  • "The most meaningful ones to me, are the ones I had no idea you took. I love the ones that make me laugh or cry just by looking at them because they're so full of emotion. We truly cannot stop smiling and are looking forward to sharing these with our family and friends."

    V & J

  • "I just wanted to say thank you so much for being a part of our wedding! You brought such a chill and relaxed (but still professional!) vibe to the event and you made the task of posed portraits (which can be torture for some of our family) incredibly easy."

    Rachel

  • "Ryan, Thank you for your amazing photography and for being such a wonderful presence on our wedding day...you have the perfect personality to keep a bride and groom relaxed and having fun in what could be a stressful time (esp the family photo bit!) Our families also commented on how nice, professional, and in control you were"

Approach & Philosophy

I believe that wedding photos are about more than the “wedding.” They’re about you and your partner, your relationship, your family … the tears, laughs, smiles, quiet moments and big hugs, clinking glasses and glowing candles, lush florals and stunning gowns, slow dances and had-one-drink-too-many wild dances.

They’re about the huge amazing moments, and small and mundane moments that make up this one glorious day. The photos are about all of that, and then some. “Present, over perfect.” I’ve been photographing weddings for a good long while now, and what gets me fired up every time is that I get to document and deliver something that people can cherish for years and years. Something that can be passed down and reminisced over long after the day is done. Looking through my grandparents’ wedding albums, that thought hit me like a lightning bolt.

I’m chasing more than just pretty photos - although I love those, and definitely strive for and deliver them. I’m after heirlooms, of reminders of who and why and how you love. Every wedding genuinely feels like an honor for me to witness and be invited into. I love being in the space where everything is happening and photographing from there.

While I’m typically in documentary-mode and fairly hands-off, and really aim to be unobtrusive, I also want to tell the honest story and capture all these intimate moments. I like being a little more sociable and getting to know you and your people - it makes it a lot more fun for everyone and allows me to get that kind of imagery. I’m not into forced, posey portraits that just feel unnatural, I’d rather it be laid back and focused on being you. Over a decade of photographing weddings means nothing really phases me, and bringing a sense of calm and positivity to every wedding day is really something I take pride in. It’s a joyful day, and I’m legitimately excited for every couple.

ENGAGEMENT SESSIONS

Engagement sessions are all about you - about taking a couple hours to spend with your favorite person (you know, the one you’re marrying) and getting an armload of amazing photos from it. It’s also perfect for people who aren’t naturally super comfortable in front of the camera (which, let’s be honest, is most of us.) This session really helps me see how you two interact together, and is a laid-back, fun way to make photos that are more reflective of your everyday life.

Want to enjoy Seattle and stay close to home? Perfect. Let’s hit somewhere like Pioneer Square, Discovery Park, find a little shop or bar to shoot in, or walk around your neighborhood and grab a few at your house. The local session is for you!

If the call of the wild is your personal anthem, you spend your weekends in lakes, and on top of mountains; and you want to go cruise around the great PNW, the adventure session is your jam. This is a half-day session, which typically entails 1-2 hours of driving each way, and a couple hours to wander around exploring the light and scenery.

Do we get the full rights to the photos? Short answer: yes, basically! Longer answer: I retain the copyright to all images, which simply allows me to both maintain quality control, and lets me share the photos I take with other lovely people getting married, like yourself. What you get is an unlimited personal use license, which means you can enjoy your photos freely - print them, share them, back them up (please), send your favorite aunt a hard drive with every single one … you get where I’m going.

How do we make the best images possible? Hey, I’m glad you asked this totally organic question! Ok, but really, it’s a good question. The best images are a result of a good collaboration and everyone investing themselves. It really is a team effort. You bring the love and emotion and style and happiness, and yourselves; and I’ll bring the rest. While I can’t make a ballroom look like a mountaintop, or a rainy PNW day look like golden glowy California, I can help show what was uniquely beautiful about you two and your wedding day. Creating space and time for great photos is also super important - we’ll work with you to figure out what’s most important to you photographically, and how to make that happen.

What we’re looking for doesn’t fit exactly in your collections. Can we customize it? Sure! Every day is different, so if you need to add on hours, or want to add an engagement session or album, or generally feel “in-between” the collections, let us know what you’re looking for an we can tailor something to you. On weekdays and “off-season” months we also have more flexibility in terms of taking on shorter wedding days and more customized collections.

We’re in! How do we book you? If you feel like you’re ready to get your date reserved with me, we just need to know the details of your booking (which package you’re wanting to book, etc.) and then we’ll send over the contract, pre-filled with those details. After you sign on the dotted line, and send over your retainer (50% of your chosen collection) the date is all yours.

FAQS

How far out do you book? On average, I book 9-12 months out for weddings. That said, I encourage you to still contact me if you’re outside of that range! I often have availability for shorter notice events as well.

How long until we get to see our photos? Turnaround time for wedding photos is 6-10 weeks, and 2-4 weeks for engagement/portrait sessions. I’m really particular about how everything looks, and want to make sure every photo for every couple gets the attention it deserves. I know waiting sucks, but good things are worth the wait, right?

What kind of equipment do you use - film or digital? Are you insured? What about backups? I shoot both film - glorious old-school-meets-new-school film - and digital. Ultimately what matters most to me is the final image - that it’s beautiful and timeless and has a specific aesthetic. The medium is a means to that end. Sometimes film is best, sometimes digital is just the ticket, and both have their strengths and weaknesses. I am fully insured, both my equipment, and for liability. My backups literally have backups. Not just my cameras, but (probably more importantly) your photos - keeping your precious images safe is massively important, and is something I take seriously.

What are your travel fees? Your wedding isn’t in Washington? Awesome! Airplane rides are my favorite. Travel fees are simply what it takes to get me there and put me up - flights, lodging, rental car. No extra fees or anything like that, I always try to keep it simple, and we give you a travel estimate right from the beginning.

How many photos do you deliver for a wedding/engagement session? Rather than aiming for a certain number, I focus on creating quality images that thoroughly tell the story in front of me on your wedding day. My goal is to be comprehensive, to get all the good stuff, without being overwhelming. That said, I generally deliver around 600-800 polished images for a wedding day, or around 75-100 per hour. For engagement sessions, 75-100 great photos on average.

Do we need a second photographer? Having a second photographer can be great! That said, in my opinion it’s frequently not a critical thing to have. I shoot most of my weddings solo, and feel totally comfortable and capable doing so. If you’re having a huge wedding, or everything is really spread out, a second photographer can really come in handy. For smaller weddings, though, two photographers can feel like a bit much - I never want people to feel like there’s a camera everywhere they turn … subtlety is key. In general, almost everything you see in my portfolio has been me flying solo. It’s always an option, though, and I’m happy to talk through whether it’s right for you.

Can we bring our dog? Or props? Yes! Always. Always dogs. And champagne. Or food. Honestly, the photos are about you so if it’s important to you (like your pup) then bring them along. I’m a huge animal person so it always makes me happy to have them there.

NEXT STEPS

If you’ve looked through the photos on my website, and feel like we’d be a great fit, I’d love to talk more! Choosing a photographer for your wedding is a big deal - you’re entrusting truly priceless memories to someone else, and that’s an honor I don’t take for granted. It’s super important that we both feel like it’s good fit. I’d really enjoy getting to know you two better, so let’s find a time for a FaceTime or in-person chat. When you’re ready to move forward, get in touch with us, and we’ll be happy to get the details set up and your date reserved.

LET'S TALK

THANK YOU!

I truly appreciate you taking the time to look through my photos! They’re what I’ve poured myself into over the last decade and a half, and it means a lot to me that you enjoy them - and can hopefully see yourself in them. I’m grateful for all the wonderful people like you who have entrusted me with their memories. If you have any thoughts or questions, I’m always here to help.

Here for what it felt like, not just what it looked like.
